It is said life is like a carnival. The giant heads on this carnival ride are not meant to generate a response of horror. Rather, each displays a specific emotional response from anger, sorrow and fear, to calm repose and happiness. The artist asks the observer the question, are we really in control of our emotions, or are we rather on a carnival ride where we travel from encounter to encounter, bumping into situations that create certain responses. This painting and others from the 1970's and 80's do have darkness, which the artist now freely admits. His sense today is that hard work toward a calmer, more understanding and compassionate state is possible. As an artist my greatest challenge is to build these positive states in the wilderness where monetary success and power is elusive.
