"Portents of Genius" was painted in 1976, just a year after I began my career as an artist. The painting features a direct transcription of two sketches completed years earlier on pieces of scrap paper, then thrown in a box for future reference. In the composition I show the figure on the left sitting as though in a jail cell with an ice pick he is using to try to break out of his confines. The cell represents the confines of my to that point rather ordinary life, monotonously proceeding day by day with little change, a life organized around society's program of daily meals, seasonal activities and holidays, the social calendar. The figure on the right self-examines the drives of male testosterone and what that means. The orange hues are inviting. A very close view shows a fly on the wall, and an egg near the bottom with one leg beginning to hatch out, just as I am trying to hatch out of my cell.
